Monograms

A monogram signals or represents something personal or special – or both! I’ve often thought the lines carved out of the forest by a prior ski resort on the slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains looks like a monogram. No longer in use, the etching on the mountain side signals something special that once was – a place no longer there yet full of memories.
Our guests have commented that they love our towels monogrammed with “OBI” – initials for Over the Brim Inn. As the sun shined once again on the monogram of the ski slope on the mountain side as I returned from the post office I began to think. It is not the monograms on the towels that brand OBI – it is the 100 individuals who have stayed with us since we opened eight short weeks ago. Each guest has left the indelible monogram of their spirit on the inn and on our hearts. Whether it is world travelers, professional photographers, astrophysicists (Mitch, what is it you do again?), couples celebrating their anniversaries, attendees at one of our festivals or just good friends and family members hanging out together – each person is special and unique – a monogram! I don’t know what the future holds but the present holds fond memories of each person who has crossed the threshold of OBI.

Welcome to Our New Hometown

First of all, I promised the “other innkeeper” – my husband, Bob, that I would not “over sell” Westcliffe – but my love and fascination for our unique new hometown is obvious. No, we are not Vale, Telluride or Crested Butte. Westcliffe is not your “typical” Colorado tourist spot. Westcliffe is a short 1.5 hour drive from Colorado Springs Airport up a scenic trail or a short 12 hour drive from Dallas (you fellow Texans KNOW that is nothing!). My only curiosity is why Westcliffe has not been more widely discovered as a wonderful place to escape the summer heat of Texas. . .or Kansas . . .or any other lower elevation !
Westcliffe IS a historic mountain mining town. It continues to be settled by visionary individuals creating a unique sense of place. Westcliffe is a community with the fore thought to put conservation districts in place, in cooperation with ranchers who continue to ranch, to preserve the mountain valley, incredible vistas and wildlife.
You can walk into the local bank and still see dusty cowboys in their chaps. No need for pretention here – clean faces and comfortable clothes are the norm. Meet up close and personal incredible artists who have chosen Westcliffe as their home for its quality of life. You’ll experience a community that cares more about art than paved roads; who cares more about you as person than what you wear or drive; that has more churches than bars. When you’re ready for such a place – you’re ready for Westcliffe. Want to learn more?  Go to http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/06ed9aed#/06ed9aed/1

Spirit Wind

If the spirit is in the wind the last three days are full of the spirit! The emerging leaves of the Aspens in our yard must be geared for here since they are clinging tightly to the limbs. Isn’t that how life is? Sometimes the wind of life pulls on us so strongly that we have to cling to the limb and trust that we won’t be blown away. Opening the inn in just six short months (including renovation) has us believing that God has geared us for just this purpose. With just one week until opening we can’t wait to see who is blown our way during our first season.
